HOW DOES ROMANTIC ATTRACTION AFFECT YOUR LIFE?

Romantic attraction can be powerful, so powerful that it affects almost all aspects of your daily life. If you feel strongly for someone, your feelings can affect your appetite, your ability to focus on schoolwork, and much more. All that’s pretty normal, especially for young adults. The good news is that romantic attraction changes over time. But as an adolescent, you’re probably not ready to settle down with one person for the rest of your life. This means that your relationships may mostly be focused on the early stages of romantic attraction, rather than the later stages. Studies show that for fifteen-year-olds, for example, most romantic relationships last on average only about three to four months.

But that’s plenty of time for the attraction to cause you lots of joy, excitement, fear, and pain. When people talk about romantic attraction, they often refer to it as “falling in love.” This is because, for most people, it doesn’t feel like they had much choice about it. They were just minding their own business, living their lives—and then the bottom dropped out! Romantic attraction is something that feels as though we’ve lost some of our control. It can be both scary and delightful!
